Terumo Administrative Office
This project for a new office wing of a newly renovated clean room research and manufacturing facility attempts to provide interconnected relationships between the interior day to day operations of a facility that is completely isolated from the exterior as required by the strict hygiene requirements of medical manufacturing and as part of its own corporate security measures. The new office wing attempts to provide a counterpoint to the highly internalized production facilities where the researchers and engineers spend the better part of their day.
An initial design decision to shift the proposed massing away from the existing production facility creates a new, secure, internal courtyard caught between the offices and the existing building. The courtyard acts as an outwardly focused threshold as employees move between production and office work. Consequently, the courtyard becomes the central organizing space for new offices and meeting rooms.
