Glass Canopy Porch
The project consists of expanding the usable exterior space of the house by converting an existing deck into a transparent volume that projects outward into the landscape. The original home by David Osler Associates in 1963, utilized pronounced window boxes around all of the windows allowing the occupants an opportunity to displace themselves from the interior volume.
The new, modern deck cantilevers into the backyard creating a synchronous relationship to the original home. The clients were interested in a minimalist structure that allowed a visual connection to the surrounding trees. In order to provide this relationship, the design uses a steel frame to maximize spans and open space below and above the deck. An existing sliding door from the living room to the existing deck was replaced with a folding accordion door that completely opens to allow a seamless transition from interior to exterior space.
